Solar scooters in Rio de Janeiro
We're hearing a lot of talk about electric cars but not so much about two-wheeled vehicles. Those of us who live and work in cities know that two-wheelers are convenient for getting from A to B and avoiding rush hour traffic queues. We also know that these things tend to guzzle petrol and make a absolute racket!
Last week's Digital Planet, from the BBC World Service, discussed an interesting concept: solar-powered electric scooters. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a solar-powered charging station has been set up by Petrobras Distribuidora, the Brazilian petrol giant, which also strives to promote "green" projects. The charging station, equipped with solar roof panels, can charge 2 to 3 electric scooters per day, for 4 hours at a time. Not only are these scooters ecological, they're also cheap to run... and quiet!

I just got back from a trip to SE Asia, being as I am from the US I had not expected the sheer amount of motorbikes everywhere. On several occasion's I would end up being stuck behind a motorbike that would be expelling huge swaths of black smoke and sound like it was about to blow up. It was barely breathable. But at the sametime they were using a lot less fuel then lets say a big American Hummer or other gas guzzlers. I like this article a lot though, I think it's a really good idea, and would love to have one!
