Times Square New Year's Eve Ball goes green
And to continue our "pedal power" series, here's another one that caught my eye on the Engadget website the other day. I'm afraid I didn't actually watch it happen live - blame the time difference - but New York's Times Square New Year's Eve Ball was powered this year by a fleet of six stationary bikes (called "power rovers"). The power generated by the pedalling was fed directly into giant "batteries" of that well-known copper-topped brand that illuminated the iconic 2010 numerals at the stroke of midnight. To light the numerals for 30 minutes required some 32,000 Watts, which is a fair amount of pedalling. Just imagine how much power the New Year's Ball needed before it was fitted with 32,000 LEDs two years ago.
It's certainly a way to start your New Year's keep-fit resolution early while generating electricity at the same time. Come to that, maybe they should hook up generators to spinning classes...
