Energy studies with power logger

Jerry Rodgers on October 29, 2009 | 834 Views

In order to reduce energy consumption you need to understand how much energy you are using and when. To do that, hook up a power logger such as the Fluke 1735 to the feeders or service. For a 3-phase wye systerm there will be connections: three phase voltages, neutral voltage, three phase currents and neutral current. Set the network topology to wye or delta to match the system you are monitoring. Set the recording time -- 15 minute intervals over a 30 day period is typical. After 30 days, download the data and review the measurements. Find average current or power on each phase, compare the phases and report the largest number. This will provide an accurate picture of the system load that you can use to identify opportunities for energy savings.
