Are we becoming more energy efficient by using electrical products?

Katharine Pearson on August 5, 2008 | 1150 Views | 1 Comment

I recently heard that using a Dishwasher at home actually saves energy compared to traditional washing-up...  to which my first reaction was that it was just invented as a good excuse to be lazy after dinner!

But looking it up on the internet I found to my amazement that there are studies showing that using a Dishwasher is more energy efficient than traditional washing-up.

While this may be good news for those of us with no time to spare, are we coming to a world where using electric products is actually more energy efficient than not using them?

Hello Katharine,

This is a worrying issue but the answer is not clear cut.

of course if we replace a manual activity by an energy using one, we have being less efficient in net energy terms, but that doesn't necessarily mean we are beingless environmentally friendly.

on the other side, there is much more evidence for the fact that using electricity using equipment to replace fossil fuel based equipment actually saves energy. take a look at the following link: http://www.leonardo-energy.org/drupal/node/2810

you will find a number of examples, both on the poster and the paper where moving toward electrical energy can save up to 80% primary energy and 60% emissions.

 regards

Sergio
