Earth Hour approaches on Saturday...24 cities, 240 000+ people, 18 000 businesses

Jonathan Buck on March 27, 2008 | 2555 Views | 3 Comments

Thanks to Vered in Israel for highlighting one major global event this week. Please do take a moment to check this out. Earth Hour, an event that started in Australia in 2007, is turning global this Saturday.  And if you live in one of the following countries, you might be committed to swich off your lights and unplug those appliances you have lazily left on standby for one hour on Saturday. As the Earth Hour site states: "In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour at 8pm on March 29. Earth Hour is the highlight of a major campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the simple steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby." Can fellow wattwatters give their feedback on this event - both before and after.

Although I am not a resident of any of the cities involved I do plan on "throwin' the breaker" on Saturday. I believe in the cause and will happily participate, knowing in some small way I actually helped.

Today' free local Swiss newspaper carries the headline " Le WWF appelle à éteindre la lumière: peu d'échos en Suisse." It appears that noone in Geneva's municipal department of energy had heard of the Earth hour move and so the city's lights will remain lit tomorrow evening. The only cities in Switzerland to participate are Nyon, Yverdon-les-Bains and Lausanne.

It's a pity the WWF, who have their headquarters in French speaking Switzerland couldn't make more of an effort to inform the local population. There are so many international firms and organizations who might have been happy to help spread the word.
